Overview

The Organization

The present form and structure of Samatat Sanstha (1972), evolved over time, through different phases from a modest origin. The idea of Samatat (1969) germinated in the minds of two friends, Arghya Kusum Dattagupta and Partha Sarathy Bandyopadhyay, who were joined by five others (Bhaskar Basu, Biswanath Chakraborty, Dipankar Lahiri, Pranab Kumar Ghosh and Sipra Dattagupta) soon enough. The organization owes its name, ‘Samatat’, to Bhaskar Basu, one of the seven founding members. The name happily carries a nuance of meaning. Samatat is the ancient name of a region of Bengal; at the same time, Sama (=common) + Tat (=plateau or shore) carries the promise of a common meeting ground for people belonging to different disciplines and/or ideological orientations. This reflected the yearning of Dattagupta and Bandyopadhyay (who were not pursuing any literary careers for themselves) to provide a lasting forum where people could meet across the divides of respective specializations and social-cultural backgrounds. Thus, with the founding members contributing a total of Rs. 700 to form a meagre initial monetary capital thus with an abundance of utopian zeal, was born a new interdisciplinary magazine of ideas and action.

Annual Function

Striving against the isolation, ineffectuality and lack of social responsibility pervading the professional and intellectual scenes, Samatat seeks to relate professional / intellectual activities to the actual needs and problems of our society, thereby contributing to the regeneration of the traditions of purposefulness in such activities. It is also involved in interdisciplinary programmes, study and action on specific issues with a view to promoting understanding and cooperation across the barriers of specialization, region and class.

Growth & Development

Samatat was the first among the little magazines to start paying honoraria to its writers. The practice was continued for the first 12 years. It also built a sizeable reserve fund by judicious management of income and expenditure. From1991, a parallel quarterly magazine called “Kishore Samatat” was launched for the thinking adolescents. After experimentation over a decade, in spite of widespread appreciations, it was abandoned owing to financial compulsion. Now we are very happy to announce that “Kishore Samatat” will resume publication very soon.

An ambitious project of great human significance has recently been undertaken by the Samatat Sanstha. The goal is to establish an Old Age Home with as many humane considerations built into it as possible. The aim is to see that Senior Citizens living in this Home are not affected by loneliness and anxiety but will have innovative facilities to keep themselves meaningfully engaged as valued members of the society. Library and computer facilities will be provided among other recreational needs, in addition to regular medical attention. The senior citizens can also mingle with small children helping them with their primary education, etc. Special financial schemes will also be woven into the system to choice. Details of this project will be available in a separate pamphlet.
